I know the title sounds like a crazy question, however, the NeoPet site has been determined by several research firms to be one of the “stickiest” sites on the web today. What the heck makes it so sticky? The answer is fairly simple, the site makes it’s users feel compelled to return because they have a virtual pet to take care of. Sounds like a far cry from internet marketing doesn’t it?
Maybe not, the site actually emails it’s users when the pets are feeling neglected. The user feels they must return to the site to maintain the virtual pet up keep required. The other tactic that is applied is the use of customization. The users can create their own characters and develop their personality to add in their own touches to the experience. In order to use some of these methods, you will need to translate them into your site and business model.
What do you readers want to know about? How can you use this knowledge to pull them back in? Build your email list and offer bonuses to those that are willing to tell you what it is they seek when they visit your site. Certainly keep a realistic mindset as you will not be able to please everyone however, you can create more of an interactive environment. In addition to interactivity, you may be given some new product ideas along the way! If you visit some of the blogs you notice on certain days of the week there are posts that require passwords in order to be read ie www.jamesbrausch.org.
If the reader can only receive the password via email they will sign up for your email list. If the reader receives a password they may feel compelled to visit the site and see what it is that is so secret. Pretty sticky huh? Just another tool to keep in mind when building a long term business. If you get a chance take a look at the Neopet.com site and let me know what it is that you think is so sticky.
