There are many articles floating around on the net about how you can get better organic search engine listings by altering the url style of your blog posts. The problem is that if you have been writing on your blog for some time you will lose all of the back links you have already built right? It would be like starting over again for some, yikes that is a scary thought! If you are a little more tech savvy you maybe aware that you can run a 301 redirect for each link this way when someone clicks your link in Google they are brought to the right post. If you have a few hundred posts and you have to enter a redirect for all of them… what a nightmare.
Well what if there is a way that you could redirect everything fairly effortlessly? I know you think I am crazy but you can actually do this quite easily with a plugin I stumbled across. The permalinks migration plugin allows you to redirect everything in a few clicks just like you would to change the permalink structure initially. Once the plugin is installed you can go into the options section select the permalink plug in, select the original format and then select the new format you are choosing. The result will be an internal 301 redirect for all of your posts.
If you did not know you could change the permalink to begin with go into the options section in your control panel and select permalinks. There are a few options you can choose from aside from the default or you can customize it.When the search engine spiders take a look at your back links they will be pleased to find a link that shows your blog/date/post name. If you think about this as a reader, it is rather nice to see such a link because it may give you an idea as to what the post is about. Maybe there is something to those search engine spiders after all! Well maybe not… in any case enjoy the plugin and the increased traffic and rankings!
