Internet Business: Benchmarking With The Big Boys

I am hoping at this point in the game those of you that are seeking to make money online have dones some research inot SEO or search engine optimization, keyword research, article writing and link buildind to get business of the ground.  Many will take a look at sites that rank in the top 5 position for the keywords they have selected and wonder how it is the site owner got there!

Bench mark, bench mark and benchmark that is all there is to it.  Businesses that run offline and online do it and so should you.  Start ut by determining how many links your competitor has.  Are you coming up with 1200, 200, 50?  At least this will give you some idea as to how you muct build a link campaign to the sie you run.

Secondly what is their keyword and meta tag list?  You can find ths out by right clicking on their site and reviewing their meta tags, descriptions, and keywords.  I am not saying that you should copy these word for word as that would not do you any good if they are not relevant to your site!  However, take a look and see what they are using and how they integrate these keywords into their descriptions, entries and page layout.

Now move on and take a look at their site layout.  Is it crowded? Is it simple?  What kind of media are they using such as photo’s, video or audio?  Begin to integrate similar features into your site without losing your site identity.  Combine this with link building campaigns and you may be surprised to see your page rank climb during the next Google rating!

Getting the Most Advertising Bang for Your Buck

If you are selling tangible products on your website and paying for advertisements you may be missing out on an inexpensive way to reach millions.  I say this because most people will write articles and use ppc but never consider sites like Shopzilla for advertising.

As long as you sell something that can be shipped you can easily pay a small fee to sites like Shopzilla to present your website as a result for a product search.  Many web surfers use these sites to hone done decently priced items.  The best part is that it can be cheaper than ppc and the buyers often times are at the end of the buying cycle… meaning they are more prepared to make an actual purchase.

Start by checking out the fees on sites like Price Grabber, Shopzilla, Price Watch etc select one that has a combination of low price and high search volume.  You can easily determine the visitor volume by looking at the website stats on Alexa.  Be certain that your item has a fairly specific description set up the campaign and start tracking.

You may be pleasantly surprised to find highly targeted leads continually trickling through your website for less than the cost of an average pay per click campaign.  Continually track the number of visitors and purchases created from the campaign and tweak you descriptions and products as necessary.  Enjoy the new sales and savings!

It’s Not What Outsourcing Can Do to You It’s What You Can Do with Outsourcing

How many times has the word outsourcing sent a chill right down your spine?  Maybe there has been some chit chat at work about part of the business being outsourced or a write up in the paper about how other countries will work for pennies on the dollar.  Either way outsourcing has become a way of life for many, face it we are in a global economy.

So how can you flip your fear into something productive?  Instead of waiting around for your job to get outsourced start outsourcing some of your own tasks.  The easiest and fastest way to do this is by hiring on a personal assistant.  Now what the heck can you do with one of those and how can you afford it?

I am glad you asked.  First and foremost if you run an internet business you can take the tasks you like least and have your virtual assistant take care of it.  If you are not into writing or researching then outsource it!  You will be happy to know that many people that apply for virtual assistant positions have bachelors and masters degrees and are perfectly capable of generating excellent blog content.

Aside from business based tasks, many virtual assistants are happy to schedule appointments for you, call the cable company, send out flowers and invitations to gatherings etc.  Imagine the time and energy you can save if you outsource the mundane stuff in order to get down to what you actually enjoy!

Now for the big question can you afford it?  What if you could outsource your tasks for $4 an hour?  Hey that is pretty cheap especially if you are using the assistant for business tasks that bring a return on your investment!  Even if the tasks are not business based the time you will free up will be well worth it.  If you muster up the courage to outsource yourself check out www.elance.com and www.ymii.com for some excellent sources of inexpensive outsourcing.

Let Pareto Put Some Punch Into Business

Do you remember Pareto from your grade school days?  Probably not right?  Well a little stroll down memory lane may help streamline your business like nothing else!  So who is Pareto and what can he do for you?  Well for starters he is the 80/20 king.

I was recently reading the 4 hour work week and I was reminded that 20% of my work produces 80% of my results!  I know it sort of seems crazy however when you think about it it makes sense.  The best traffic I generate comes from blog commenting, article writing, and blog carnivals however this is only about 20% of the work I put into running this blog.

Eighty percent of the time I am researching new blog topics and how to info in order to continue to grow.  The thing is a little less research and a lot more action would equal a traffic boom.  How much more time would you have to be effective if you could cut out 80% of the fat?  Even better how much could you business improve if your 20% expanded?

Start out by combining similar processes, so write your blog posts at once to produce more, submit multiple blog entries to carnivals and write out batches of blog comments at a time.  Stay away from web browsing, phone calls and instant messaging while you are completing your tasks and watch how easy it is to enhance your results!

Breathing Life Back Into Your Blog

If you drop by my bog regularly you may have been wondering what the heck happened to me!  Did my blog suffer the same cruel fate as 90% of blogs out there?  Nope.

So what happens when life gets the better of you and you fall of track? Simple, get back on the horse and get moving!  So what do we have on today’s agenda?  Continual process improvement.

I recently accepted a new position at a large firm and I have been charged with the task of over hauling a program that operates like a dinosaur.  I got to thinking at how little internet business owners complete this task in running their business.

One of the best things you can do is show a friend what your daily tasks consist of.  The reason being, often times a fresh eye can give you some of the best process improvement suggestions.  It is hard to think outside the box when your business operates inside of it.

Take it easy and look to enhance one process at a time.  Jot down the suggestions you get and begin to refine your processes.   As you go through each one you will begin to stream line you operations.

The last and most important piece of the puzzle is to make sure you enjoy what you do.  It is no fun if you have lost your passion.  In fact, the quality of the work produced will plummet.  Keep your eye on the ball and success will come around the bend!

I’ve got news for anyone who thinks sales are going to happen with one contact with their market…IT AIN’T GONNA HAPPEN.

We Hold These Constraints to Be Self Evident

Ok so my last post highlighted a few tips and tricks I have read up on to help marketers climb those hurdles. I want to come back and touch upon another tricky road block you probably don’t even see.  Most times wen you take a look at a problem such as lack of traffic, low conversion etc there are a few pieces of the problem you assume to be true.  Perhaps you feel you have plenty of links or that your ad copy is powerful.

What you will want to do is second guess anything that you take for granted as being evident.  Why the heck would you do this?  Well the issue is, many times we assume something is fact or evident when in fact that is not the case.  Take the extra few minutes to test these assumptions to see if they hold their weight.  Perhaps Google has wiped out many of your article links as duplicate content, or maybe your ad copy needs tweaking.

Any time you bump into an issue throw this step into your problem solving methods and I guarantee you will come out wiser.  In fact, you may begin to drop many of your assumptions - remember that old saying … never assume.  Well you get the point on that!

Taking a Break

Writing blog posts day in and day out can become cumbersome if you are not careful.  I took a few days off to rejuvenate and determine what else could be contributed to the world of internet marketing.  I am currently reading through a book on problem solving that really opened my eyes to looking at constraints.

Many times a marketer has a closed perception of what marketing issues are and what prevents us from surpassing them.  Now I have not yet completed the book, but I wanted to pass on a few tips while I continue.  The first is always look at the other party as rational even when it seems they are not?  If you put out an excellent product and your traffic is good but you are not getting sales then your consumers are irrational right?  Wrong!  Assume, that they are logical and see where that leads you.  You may be surprised to find some solutions you would never have thought of.

The other tip is to look at a problem through the eyes of enhancement. Instead of looking at what needs to be removed take a look at what could be improved.  As a consumer what would the ideal product be?  Create a list, often times enhancements can be made using what you already have.  Looking at the problem this way will also help you look at the whole picture rather than just a piece of the issue.  Stay tuned for the title of the book and more tips and tricks to help you leap those marketing hurdles.

Internet Business & Eternal Return

Have you ever heard of Eternal Return, the theory recently brought back by Friedrich Nietzsche?  What if you had to live your life over and over again from start to end?  Is this a horrifying thought?  I hope not.  In looking at how you have been running your internet business, would you run it the same way if you could start all over again?  The thought process that accompanies this theory may in some ways be painful yet helpful.

If you would not run things the same way then why not change it so that in six months you can look back with certainty that things are moving in the right direction.  As a beginner, attempting to create a path to success can be a tricky one wrought with errors.  Luckily for us, the longer you run the business, the better you should be as you will be seasoned with time.

Use this theory to keep yourself in check every few weeks.  If you find you are lagging in article writing, blog posting or product creation, think about where you will be in six months and make the move to better the business.  The more you stay on top of things the sweeter and greater your success will be.  Good luck!
